Koha Kai recognised at awards


The late Suzanne Spencer’s husband Frank Steans with Koha Kai project development Carole Power (middle) and project leader Janice Lee last week at the Southern Maori Business Network, Te Kupeka Umaka Maori Ki Araiteuru (KUMA) annual general meeting and Suzanne Spencer Business Award Evening, celebrating southern Maori entrepreneurs and business leaders. Koha Kai received the Suzanne Spencer Tohu Maumahara Business Award this year, recognised not only for its contribution to local Maori business development, but also for its work in the employment sector with tangata whaikaha (disabled people) and tamariki (children) through the Lunches in Schools programme. Suzanne Spencer was a mentor, advisor, supporter, advocate, and supporter of numerous businesses and business people in the Maori community. After her death in 2012, the award was established to acknowledge her vision for Maori economic growth, and contribution to the local economy through new and growth businesses run by and with Maori innovators and entrepreneurs.
