My Food Bag heads south

INVERCARGILL asked for it, and My Food Bag delivered.
The popular food delivery service, along with the new Bargain Box, will be available in the city later this month.
The business was co-founded by Cecilia and James Robinson, Theresa Gattung, former MasterChef winner and dietitian Nadia Lim, and her husband Carlos Bagrie, who is originally from Invercargill.
It was launched in 2013 and is now available throughout many regions in New Zealand, and Sydney and Melbourne in Australia.
Invercargill residents showed their interest in bringing the service south by creating a dedicated Facebook page earlier this year.
‘‘I’ve been wanting it to come to Invercargill for a long time. We’ve got a big connection there,’’ Ms Lim said.
There were several food bag options available including gourmet, vegetarian and gluten-free, along with the Bargain Box which provided simpler meals, she said.
‘‘We provide four or five nights worth of dinner recipes and the ingredients to cook the recipes with.’’
She said this meant people didn’t have to plan or shop for the meals, and also didn’t need to buy a whole jar of something like capers or a spice they wouldn’t necessarily use up. They just would need a few staples in their kitchen like milk, salt and oil.
‘‘It really cuts down on a lot of wastage… with My Food Bag you get everything in perfect quantities.’’
Ms Lim said there were now about 20 chefs working in the company’s development kitchen, who created and reviewed recipes depending on people’s feedback.
The chefs follow Ms Lim’s ‘‘nude food’’ philosophy, which was about creating simple, healthy food, and following Ministry of Health guidelines which include having half a plate of vegetables, one quarter protein and one quarter carbohydrates, she said.
‘‘It’s all about eating real food which comes from ground, the sea and the sky, and less processed food from the factories.’’
She said there were My Food Bag options for people living on their own, couples and families.
Invercargill orders are being taken now, with deliveries beginning on Sunday, August 21. For more information go to myfoodbag.co.nz, or bargainbox.co.nz.
