IF the thought of going to a show which relies on audience interaction is enough to scare you off – don’t panic.
Scared Scriptless is an improvisation-based show where quick-thinking performers come up with scenes, skits and musical numbers on the spot.
However, The Court Jesters artistic director Dan Bain said the show was driven more by audience suggestion than participation and he encouraged people to come along to their performances with an open mind.
“A lot of people think when we talk about the show that it’s one of the shows where we get people up and roast them.
“That’s not really what our show is at all. We get suggestions.”
Bain said if they did end up bringing someone up on stage, it would only be those willing to play.
“If that’s holding you back let that go and come on down – it’s a fun night out.”
The Christchurch-based company has been running twice-weekly late-night comedy shows for 28 years.
Bain said part of the show’s longevity could be because of the fact it endlessly reinvented itself.
“I think it rewards coming back time and time again, it’s always fresh, it’s always new.”
Three performers and a musician will be travelling south to perform two shows – one for families and one for adults.
The family show would be modelled on its school holiday show which was held annually in Christchurch, he said.
It would be fun, family-friendly comedy including silly songs and sketches made up from audience suggestion.
The Court Jesters will also be taking part in a theatresports/improv workshop which is being supported by Arts Murihiku. Tailored for senior students and adults, the workshop is free, but registrations are essential.
“It’ll be great to be able to spread some of the learning that we’ve come across and introduce the virus into the Invercargill environment,” he laughed.
