Book lovers rejoice

Book-lovers flock to the opening of the Invercargill Rotary Club's annual book sale at the Civic Theatre yesterday.

A QUEUE down Tay St led to the doors of Invercargill’s Civic Theatre, evidence of a remarkable turnout for the Invercargill Rotary Club’s annual booksale, which started yesterday.

Volunteers have filled the main-stage of the theatre with thousands of books, with LPs and boardgames in the mix, on offer until Sunday.

‘‘I think the people of Invercargill are ready for an event to connect with people,’’ Rotary Club president Lisa-Maree Fleck said.

‘‘We are certainly encouraged by the connection this year, that booksales still have a very important place in our community today.’’

She said the sale wasn’t likely to run out of books quickly, as the club had seen a remarkable increase on donations over previous years.

Rotary Club Book Sale Committee chairman Richard Russell said the event was made by the community, for the community.

‘‘They bring the books in and we distribute the profits of the sales.’’
