Hairstylists have a winning Vision

Vision Hair & Beauty owner Vanessa White (left) and third- year apprentice Danielle Connew were both recognised in the National Industry Awards recently.

THE team at Waikiwi’s Vision Hair & Beauty has a double reason to be celebrating this week, as two stylists walked away with two honours from the National Industry Awards.

Salon owner Vanessa White, and apprentice Danielle Connew, both of Invercargill, entered the National Industry Awards last year by sending in photographs of their work, and heard in September they had made it as finalists.

Miss Connew, who is in the third year of her apprenticeship under Mrs White, came first in the Editorial Stylist of the Year, Next Generation category.

‘‘So that’s an image you would see on the front cover of a magazine,’’ Mrs White said.

‘‘I’m stoked for Danielle, I don’t think Danielle understands how big it is. I’m really excited for her and it’s a really big thing. She’s only been hairdressing for three years and she got first out of all the apprentices that entered.

‘‘I’ve had a couple of other girls be finalists throughout the years as well but Danielle’s the first one to actually make it, so it’s awesome.’’

Miss Connew said on the morning of the competition, the model she had planned to work with was unable to make it, so she had to find a replacement model and change her plan to suit the new model.

‘‘You kind of have a rough idea of what you’re working towards and then wing it on the day,’’ she said.

‘‘You’ve kind of got to think outside of the square a little bit.’’

In a separate category, Mrs White managed to land third place in the Patrick Cameron section, with her Aotearoa-inspired design.

The awards had been postponed twice due to Covid, and were eventually held online.

Mrs White said she had placed as a finalist several times throughout her 19 years of hairdressing, and was excited to have been placed this year.

‘‘It’s a great achievement. We’re just really excited.’’
