THOUGH it has been long undisputed among locals, Invercargill’s Queen’s Park has now been officially recognised as one of the most beautiful public spaces in New Zealand.

Winning by popular vote, Queen’s Park came out on top in the Kiwis’ Choice section of Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s 2022 Beautiful Awards.

Invercargill City Council parks and recreations manager Caroline Rain said she was stoked with the award and commended the hard work of all those at the park.

‘‘Our team are so stoked to get the recognition that, at least I think, they deserve.

‘‘It gives us the opportunity to showcase how amazing Invercargill is.’’

Mrs Rain also noted the incredible foresight of the original city planners and their foresight
in the location of the park.

‘‘It fascinates me that the original city planners had that foresight.

‘‘It’s been here for such a long time, and we’ve benefited from their long-term planning for
    decades.’’

The Beautiful Awards have been running annually since 1972, and work to acknowledge
towns and cities throughout the country that are passionate about keeping New Zealand beautiful.
