Also as part of the 50th celebrations, Invercargill hardware store E Hayes & Sons will host the Burt Munro’s World Speed Record 50th Anniversary Charity Auction featuring a new Indian Scout motorcycle, with all the proceeds to benefit Hospice Southland.

E Hayes & Sons managing director Neville Hayes said the store and name had long been considered home to the legacy of Burt Munro and he was proud to be celebrating Munro’s record in this way.

As well as the Indian Scout 1133cc V-twin motorcycle, dozens of items had been donated for the auction, including customised Indian motorcycle apparel, a customised motorcycle helmet, a signed cookbook from celebrity chef Nadia Lim and a pair of boxing gloves signed by Joseph Parker.

“We are overwhelmed with the generosity of people who are not only keen to mark this important milestone with us, but so willing to give something back to the community.”

The auction will be held at the Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill on Saturday, August 26, 5pm-7pm. Tickets are $10 and will be on sale from E Hayes & Sons from May 1.
