INVERCARGILL Licensing Trust (ILT) president Alan Dennis said it was hoped an announcement about the location of a new hotel would be made at the end of the month or early February.
“It is going to be something really special and memorable for Southland.”
Mr Dennis declined to say what possible locations were being considered, citing commercial sensitivity, but said the ILT was in the final stages of concept design, costings and conducting feasibility studies on several city locations.
Mr Dennis said the building of a hotel in Invercargill was not a purely commercial decision for the ILT.
With the Southland Regional Development Strategy (SoRDS) plans to make Southland a more vibrant place to live, the ILT wanted to take a leading role in contributing to the rejuvenation of Invercargill’s CBD, he said.
“ILT is very positive about the idea of developing a new hotel.
“We are very keen to react to the community’s needs and wants.”
The ILT wanted to “work in concert” with the SoRDS plans for the city, in particular the new city art gallery, and investments the Richardson Group had made, he said.
