Concert series to begin

SOUTHERN soprano Rebecca Ryan has organised a new concert series for Invercargill which begins this weekend.
The 2016 Classic Series will include three concerts at St Mary’s Basilica, starting on Sunday.
Based in Invercargill, Ryan studied music and information technology at the University of Otago before moving to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music where she was recently made an associate.
Now a mother of three, Ryan said she hadn’t been doing a lot of singing lately so decided to put a recital programme together.
‘‘In terms of classical music I wanted to make it a bit more interesting and I wanted to involve different groups.’’
Each accompanist would also perform solo at the concerts.
‘‘They’ve got their own pieces of music to showcase as well.’’
Ryan said she was keen to perform a song from the movie The Fifth Element, which led to the theme for the first concert Opera at the Movies.
Ryan will perform with the Invercargill Symphonia, with the programme also including music from A Room with a View, Eat, Pray, Love and Jumanji.
The second concert, on Sunday, June 12, will be Orchestra by Piano, with international pianist John Van Buskirk.
The programme will include Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder and Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate.
It will also include Handel’s Gloria, which Ryan performed at its United Kingdom premiere.
The final concert, on Sunday, June 26, features A Capella Singers and includes music from Mozart’s Vespers, Haydn’s Creation, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Brahm’s Requiem.
The concerts would be family-friendly, Ryan said, with free entry for children.
‘‘Things like the orchestra are interesting for kids to see and they might get interested in playing the piano or an instrument.’’
Ryan said she hoped to continue the series next year.
She said she was enjoying singing again, with future performances planned including Handel’s Oreste for the Auckland Opera Studio in August.
‘‘It’s good to be performing. You do miss these things.’’
