Emma Gordon (27) and Georgia Gordon (99) will honor their father Scott Gordon at Riverside Speedway this weekend.

AFTER a month-long break, drivers and fans are hanging out for a taste of Speedway action.

This weekend’s meeting at X Factor Cars Riverside Speedway will certainly not disappoint with three Southland Championships set to be contested, along with the first running of the Scott Gordon Memorial and the Stag Cup.

Drivers in Youth Saloons, Production Saloons and Saloons will all be contesting their Southland Championships.

In the Youth class, Harrison Brown has had a mortgage on this title. Having won it the past two seasons, he will be gunning for a third title in his final season in the Youth ranks.

Production Saloons will be a tight affair, as usual, with several highly ranked out-of-town drivers hinting they may make the trek south to try to claim the championship. This is yet to be confirmed but will certainly add to the fierce competition in the grade.

Saloons have had a massive season and the Southland Championship has sat unchallenged for a season due to Covid-19. Phil Burgess, of Cromwell, is the reigning champion and would certainly like to hang on to this piece of silverware, but several “challengers are eager to make a space on the mantelpiece themselves.

Sprintcars have seen a bit of a resurgence this season and the grade will be running for the first Stag Cup.

A good, strong field of these 800-horsepowered V8 monsters has been confirmed and this looks to be a trophy which will hold some prestige across the Sprintcar grade for years to come.

The main event is the first running of the Scott Gordon Memorial for Six Shooter.

A capacity field will battle it out all day, then go head to head in a 21-lap feature final being the number of Gordon’s racecar.

Gordon died last year but his popularity has certainly come to the fore with this event.

Drivers from throughout the South Island have grabbed the available spots on the grid to honour him, and many sponsors have come on board to assure this championship is one to remember.

What also makes this event special is that two of Gordon’s daughters, Emma and Georgia, will be competing in it.

Racing gets under way at Riverside this Saturday at 2pm.
