Liam MacDonald hustles his Nissan Pulsar around the Autocross course at Teretonga Park during Round 5 of the Evolution Motorsport ClubSport Championship on Sunday.

LIAM MacDonald, of Invercargill, maintained his lead in both the Motorkhana and Sprint Championships in the penultimate round of the Evolution Motorsport ClubSport Championship at Teretonga Park on Sunday.

MacDonald has won three of the four Motorkhana Championship rounds before this round and added another when he set the fastest time in his Nissan Pulsar on all three Motorkhana tests on Sunday morning. MacDonald took maximum points for his efforts with Josh Cooper in a Toyota Corolla second, ahead of Andrew Kennedy in a Toyota Starlet and Craig Allan, who went into the round second on points, fourth in his Honda Prelude.

MacDonald made it a perfect day when he won the Autocross event in the afternoon, giving him five from five for the season with just one round remaining. Josh Cooper was again second with Craig Allan third in his Nissan 180SX.

The arrival of more new faces to the championship continued when 14-year-old Invercargill twins, Ricky and Ajay Smith, debuted at a Southland Sports Car Club event sharing a Toyota Starlet in both the Motorkhana and Autocross.

Both improved their times throughout the day with Ajay taking bragging rights in the Motorkhana before Ricky reversed the order in the Autocross.

The next Southland Sports Car Club ClubSport event is a non-championship grass autocross at the King family’s property at Rakahouka on Sunday, February 13, before the final round of the Evolution Motorsport ClubSport Championship at Teretonga Park on Saturday, March 26.

A non-championship event will close the 2021/2022 season on Sunday, April 10.

Anyone contemplating having a go can either take part in an event or come along and have a look at what the sport entails.

Anyone aged 12 and above can have a go (youngsters need a parent or guardian consent) and can use the Evolution Motorsport Nissan Sentra for a small hire fee.
