This week’s Express Wheels: 1997 Honda Torneo number 6i

1997 Honda Torneo owned by Steve Nicholas.

Name: Steve Nicholas

From: Invercargill

When and why did acquire it?
A year ago. I had written off my old speedway car, having rolled it twice, which wasn’t favourable. It was already half-built as a production saloon by a fellow driver from Dunedin. He had been slowly building it up, but had lost interest.

What is the vehicle’s history?
It had been a road car.

Has it been altered in any way?
It has been altered for speedway. I am keen to hear from potential sponsors who would like to promote themselves on the vehicle with signage.

What’s it like to drive?
Not that fast, but next season it will be faster.

Where’s your favourite stretch of road?
On track: Central Motor Speedway at Cromwell. I have always been around speedway. My brother drove stock cars. So when I had the opportunity to get back into it, why not? Been back for two-and-a-half seasons.

Top speed?
On track: No idea.

Best driving experience?
The first time I competed in the New Zealand title last season at Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell.

Worst driving experience?
When I rolled the previous car.

Best music to drive to?
On track: Listening to that engine roar.

Describe your driving style:
Flat out.

If you could go for a drive in any vehicle it would be a..?
Too many to name.

What was the first vehicle you ever bought?
A 1974 Hillman Hunter, aka The Billy Bunter.

Do you belong to any clubs?
X-Factor Cars Riverside Speedway.

Engine: Two litre, V tec

Transmission: Manual

Colour: Dark blue
