Imagine being a 1917 Steampunk steam train in 2017

Name: The Jules Verne – Named after the greatfiction writer

From: The Southern Society of Steampunk Steamologists

When and where did you buy it? Acquired for the Santa Parade 2017

What is the vehicle’s history? It was a sad and dirty Noddy train when we discovered it

Have you altered it in any way? It’s been scrubbed up, painted, embellished, glued and screwed and had a complete Steampunk makeover

What’s it like to drive? Ask Loco Ted, he’s our main engine driver, and Jolly Molly the dolly is his stoker

What’s it worth and what does it owe you? It’s unique and priceless to the group now as we have spent about 100 people-hours on it

What’s your favourite stretch of road? The circuit that runs from Kelvin St, Gala St, Dee St and back along Kelvin St, which is the Santa Parade route

Top speed? 5kmh unless it is time travelling (which Steampunk people like to do)

Best driving experience? Santa Parade 2017

Best music to drive to? Can’t usually hear music for the sound of the steam. Although we did feel in-sync with the Tongan music in front of us at the Santa Parade

Describe your driving style: I think I can, I think I can

What other vehicles of note have you owned? The Moose Caboose, which carries the wee moose team behind

If you could go for a drive in any vehicle, what would be your dream machine? The Time Machine from H G Wells’ book

Do you belong to any clubs? The Southern Society of Steampunk Steamologists (SSSS). We meet on the second Thursday of every month at 7.30pm at 157 Dee St, in the Steampunk Den out the back (through the back entrance). We are a group of like-minded, creative people who just have a lot of fun. New members welcome.
