1956 Chevrolet Belair

Vehicle: 1956 Chevrolet Belair

When and why did you buy it? I brought it 17 and a half years ago as I enjoy muscle cars and hot rods

What is the vehicle’s history? New Zealand-new, sold in Nelson, and lived in the South Island all its life. It has had a full bare metal repaint five years ago by Derek Orr Refinishers

Have you altered it in any way? Every way you can think of, but it still holds that cool 50s classic look. It’s now just used for the weekend cruise with my family and grandchildren. The kids have grown up in it and now it’s the grandkids’ turn. They love going out and going cruising

What’s it like to drive? It rides like a big American car should – a dream in heaven

What’s it worth or what does it owe you? That’s still a secret I keep from my wife, as it would give her too many ideas

Where’s your favourite stretch of road or road trip? Any road trip that has the special people in my life cruising with me… family

Top speed? Cruises at 100kmh, but it’s there on tap if needed

Best driving experience? As above, cruising with my family. But today (last Tuesday) is about one of my grandsons, Tama, as he has been through a lot of issues healthwise over the past 12 months. Today is his first day at Southland Boys’ High School and he also won a competition thanks to H&J Smith, Heliventures New Zealand Ltd and 89.2 MoreFM. H&J Smith set Tama up with his school uniform, stationery and all the extras needed for school. Heliventures New Zealand Ltd took Tama on a flight and dropped him off at his school in one of their helicopters. And 89.2 MoreFM arranged the competition. I guess I’m just carrying it on for him by collecting him after school and giving him a ride home in the V8

Worst driving experience? Coming around a corner to find one of those “special” tourists stopped so that they can take a photo, yeah right – go figure

What other vehicles of note have you owned? Fords, Chevs, a Pontiac, Holdens and currently have a SS Commodore and a Chevy C10 short-bed pick up

Best music to drive to? AC/DC and played very loud

Describe your driving style: Just a cruiser, but on tap if needed

If you could go for a drive in any vehicle it would be a… Anything that’s old and cool

What was the first car you ever bought? Standard 10 ute at the age of 12

Do you belong to any clubs? Street Machines Southland
