Balfour Lions Club president Olivia Ross hands a $3000 cheque to Southland Charity Hospital Board chairman Dr Murray Pfeifer on Friday.

ON a mission to support Southlanders to get the care “they need and deserve”, the Balfour Lions Club has donated $3000 towards the Southland Charity Hospital.

Balfour Lions Club president Olivia Ross met with Southland Charity Hospital Board chairman Dr Murray Pfeifer in Invercargill on Friday to hand over the club’s cheque.

Ms Ross said the money was raised by the club in March, at its Takitimu Mountains and Beyond 4WD Trip event in Northern Southland.

“It was a fundraiser for Southland that all our members felt strongly about.

“As a club, it’s what we do. It was our way to give back to the community.”

Most of the club’s members had been touched by cancer in one way or another, she said.

“It [the charity hospital] will be a long-term gain for the community.

“We want to see this being able to make a change for the future and see people get the benefits they need and deserve.”

Dr Pfeifer said the club’s donation was a “fantastic and extremely generous” contribution.

“We’re very happy with the way fundraising is going.

“Seeing the donations come in gives us all a real boost.

“We thought the donations might tail off but they haven’t, each day there’s been quite a significant increase.

“We hope that it keeps going and going.”
