INVERCARGILL councillors are eagerly awaiting a Government funding boost for the region.
During the Invercargill City Council’s performance, policy and partnerships meeting on Tuesday, strategy and policy manager Rhiannon Suter said the announcement could be made today.
A spokeswoman for Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones confirmed the minister would be in Southland today.
The Southland Express understands it could be related to the announcement of Provincial Growth Fund and shovel-ready projects.
A spokeswoman for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also confirmed she would be visiting the region today as would Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Energy and Resources Minister Megan Wood.
However, she confirmed the primary focus of Ms Ardern’s visit would be to engage with local leadership to discuss economic opportunities.
The information about the annnouncement was made after Invercargill Mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt raised concerns about a scheduled Long Term Plan workshop being delayed by a week.
Ms Suter said the reason for the suggested delay was council would need to understand the impact of the announcements and what it would mean for its Long Term Plan projects.
