Mayoral Moments

ALL of Southland’s communities are different. Each has its own distinct personality, wealth of opportunities and set of challenges facing it in the future.
While there is a lot that binds us together as Southlanders and we share the goal of ensuring our district is one future generations can enjoy, no two communities are exactly the same.
That’s why it is so important the voices of all Southlanders are heard — and why Southland District Council will be hosting a series of Community Conversations, starting this month.
These public meetings will give us a good picture of the issues that matter the most to you and your community, and how we can all work together to address these for the better.
I would certainly encourage you to make the most of the opportunity to help shape your community’s future. Nobody is in a better position than you to tell us what is happening in your community — the good and the bad — and what you reckon we can all be doing to continue growing a healthy, strong Southland. I know that matters to you, and it certainly matters to the Southland District Council.
It’s crucial we get your feedback on this. Unless you tell us what is really important to your community, the work council does may not be the best fit for it.
We need to hear from the people who live and work in different parts of our district to get a deeper understanding of how your community ticks.
The Community Conversations meetings will be exactly that — a chance for the public and council to sit down with one another and really have a back-and-forth about where we want to see Southland go in the future.
We won’t be talking at you, we want these meetings to open up a dialogue and give our people an opportunity to air their thoughts about what makes the place they live so great, how we can take advantage of the opportunities available to us, how we can find solutions to the not-so-good, and how we can join together to make our district as strong as possible.

The Community Conversations meetings are an opportunity to speak your mind.
I’m looking forward to talking with you soon.
