Burt stamps his mark

INVERCARGILL’S Burt Munro has already solidly claimed a spot in Southland’s history but the Southland icon will continue to travel the globe, as images of his statue feature on a new $1.50 stamp.

Southland Stamp Club member George Stewart wasn’t going to miss the chance of owning one of the limited-edition, collectable Customised Advertising Labels (CAL).

Mr Stewart managed to buy the Munro CAL at the club’s annual fair this month. CAL stamps were generally bought by collectors as an investment because they usually appreciated in value over time, Mr Stewart said. The most he had paid for a stamp was 150  pounds (NZ$293) for a farthing (quarter penny) stamp.

The stamps were only available from philatelic (stamp) dealers.
