NEWFIELD Park School pupils had a school trip with a difference last week when they visited a building site after a classmate won a competition.
Small heads looked up to the sky and several “woahs” were heard as the pupils walked past the towering crane on the ILT Langlands Hotel building site, on the corner of Dee and Don Sts, in Invercargill, on Friday.
It was Harley Coutts, 6, who was successful in the Name the Crane competition with his entry, Lofty the Yellow Lifter.
The prize ncluded a class visit to the site, a $2000 technology prize for the school donated by ILT, morning tea and a play in the inside park at the Homestead restaurant with Harley receiving an iPad from Leighs Construction.
One classmate, William Ireland (7), talked to the crane operator via walkie talkie, asking questions like, “What can you see up there?”, “Can you see the airport?” and “Are you in the clouds?”.
For Harley, the competition win meant he would get to play Minecraft on his new device.
When asked what he liked most about the crane he replied with a big grin.
“I like they can lift stuff.”
