Community service acknowledged

THERE were flowers and good wishes last Wednesday for Joyce Martin, who has retired after 26 years as the Invercargill Meals on Wheels co-ordinator.
Craig Smith, of the Rotary Club of Invercargill, said Mrs Martin was well-known to all the volunteer drivers and the club wanted to acknowledge the work she had done for so many within the community.
‘‘She is so special and has touched so many hearts. Joyce has been so delightful for all the volunteers to deal with… She knows us all by name.’’
Mrs Martin said she had seen a lot of changes throughout the decades such as the size of the food containers, which she described as ‘‘big and cumbersome trays’’ in the beginning but which had now reduced to less than a quarter of that size.
‘‘Now it’s all disposable containers,’’ she said.
When she began in 1990 there were 120 clients — today there were 50, she said.
‘‘Although we had up to 150 in the past.’’
Mrs Martin said although she would miss the people she worked with, including volunteer drivers, colleagues and clients, she was looking forward to spending more time with family and in her garden.
‘‘I have been really lucky to have gotten to know all these people over all these years.’’Nike footwearBoots
