WHETHER you are riding a bike, running, pushing a pram, or simply walking – the Winton Fun Run is all about getting out and having fun.

Organised by the Central Southland Community Swimming Pool committee, spokeswoman Monique Harvey said the popular community event, now into its sixth year, also offered free swimming for those taking part, live entertainment and spot prizes, as well as the chance to take part in the fun run/walk/bicycle.

This year, it will be held at Central Southland College, with the proceeds to go towards the Winton community swimming pool.

“Being able to have a free swim afterwards was another benefit of holding the event at the college,” she said.

People had a choice of how far they would like to run, bike or walk, with a 2.5km, 6km or 12km course, with water stations along the way.

Food and refreshments will also be available, so it was recommended people bring along some cash.

Last year, up to 600 people took part, and Mrs Harvey was hoping for about the same number this year.

Funds from the event will go towards resealing and repainting the pool.

“It will cost $15,000 to reseal and paint the pool’s interior because special paint was needed,” she said.

The other pool-related project the committee was raising funds for was to get a coal feeder made, as the pool used coal-fired heating, she said.

Mrs Harvey said because of the “good summer”, the pool had been used extensively recently.

“We had really good numbers. There were 50 kids most days during the holidays… and the pool is also used before and after school, as well as by two swim coaches who utilise it.”

Mrs Harvey said although people could register on the day, it was advisable to register before 9.45am as last year there were a lot of people at the same time, which caused a backlog.

Because of the distance diversity, people of all ages and fitness levels could take part.
