Preschool group wants to expand

THE group behind the thriving Southland Rudolf Steiner preschool group wants to expand to open a kindergarten or holistic education centre in Invercargill.
The group, based at the Ryal Bush Community Centre, was formed six years ago and has grown to include 15 families from throughout Southland.
One of its co-ordinators, Michelle Templeton, of Riverton, said its founders always held the vision of expanding.
They had now reached the stage where they were ready to join others from like-minded community groups with a view to setting up a centralised holistic education centre.
She said it would ‘‘be great’’ if the Steiner preschool could broaden its scope to involve groups such as home schooling, prenatal education, yoga, dance, organic gardening and sustainable living.
Rudolf Steiner education is an international movement founded in 1919. More than 1000 schools and kindergartens exist worldwide, with 10 schools and 24 kindergartens operating in New Zealand.
Rudolf Steiner education is also known as Waldorf education. Its main point of difference from mainstream is that it educates the child from the three-fold perspective of mind, body and soul.
Traditional academic subjects are taught alongside emotional and social development through experiential and child-centered learning delivering the right stimulus at the right time.
The Southland-based preschool group meets every Wednesday from 9.30am-noon.
Mrs Templeton said parents were welcome to go along to see what the group was all about.
