The new registrar of electors for Invercargill and Clutha-Southland is Danette Pikia.
Ms Pikia’s role involves maintaining and updating the electoral roll and community outreach to encourage people to register on the roll and vote.
“I encourage people to have their say and vote for the direction of New Zealand,” she said.
Southlanders had so far been slow to register to vote or update their details, and she particularly wanted to encourage Maori and young people, a large proportion of whom did not generally vote.
“[Youth] are a huge voice, but they are a voice that goes largely unheard,” she said.
The deadline to be included on the printed electoral roll, which is used in voting places, and to be sent an EasyVote pack at the start of the voting period is Wednesday, August 23.
Anyone enrolled after August 23 will have to cast a special declaration vote.
The 2017 New Zealand general election will be held on Saturday, September 23.
