IT was with surprise Awarua RSA’s recently retired secretary of 38 years received one of the highest awards on offer.
Seventy-two-year-old Ivan Butler thought he was going to just a typical get-together last Saturday.
“Unbeknownst to me I was presented with this award… I was speechless.”
It was Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association southern district president Jared Scott who handed him a Gold Star and certificate.
Mr Butler enjoyed his time as secretary but decided to retire from the role when it became hard to hear what was being said at meetings.
Before taking on the role of secretary, he served in Vietnam from 1969-1971 as a gunner in 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery.
When he came home, he served as a sergeant in the Territorial Forces until 1989.
