Society appealing for volunteers

ALZHEIMERS Society Southland is calling for volunteers to help during its annual street appeal next month.
Volunteer co-ordinator Raewyn Stiles said volunteers were needed at collection stations in tSouthland, including Riverton, Bluff, Winton, Gore, Te Anau, Lumsden and Invercargill.
The street appeal will be held on September 16 and 17 from 10am-4pm daily, and Mrs Stiles said even if volunteers could only give an hour or two, she would like to hear from them.
‘‘All money raised from the street appeal will stay in the region and would be used to ensure the services the society provided remained free,’’ she said.
During the appeal the public would also be able to purchase keyring torches, pens, back scratchers and coffee mugs, Mrs Stiles said. Next month is also Alzheimers awareness month. The Southland society will be encouraging businesses and rest homes to hold a fundraising morning or afternoon ‘‘Cuppa for a Cause’’.
A ‘‘Memory Walk’’ is also being held on Sunday, September 18, leaving at noon from the Feldwick Gates, Queens Park, Invercargill. All were welcome to attend to help raise the awareness of Alzheimers within the community, the women said.
