Stepping up to help those in need

IF you’re a hairdresser, beautician, podiatrist or massage therapist, then Melissa Aitken would love to hear from you.

Ms Aitken is the organiser of the biannual Free Haircuts and Services for Those in Need event, which offers services and goods for people in the community who are in need of a helping hand.

The event at the end of this month would be the 11th time it had been held.

As well as those who could provide services, Ms Aitken was also wanting more volunteers.

“This year the event falls on the same day as the Relay for Life so some of my long-serving volunteers are unable to help,” she said.

“So I’m open to anyone who would like to come along and assist.”

She was also looking for donated goods for the event, which was being held on Sunday, February 28.

“If people would like to donate non-perishable grocery items or pre-loved clothing, books, shoes and kids toys take those too.”

Invitations to attend the day were available via case workers and the many affiliated service providers around Invercargill or by contacting Melissa via the Facebook page or by phoning her on 027 533 3600.

Those who needed a ride to or from the event, could also seek transport the same way.

“We’re very lucky as St John use the van for the pick-up service,” she said.

While she was excited about hosting the afternoon event, she knew one special mascot would probably not make this year’s event.

“Bubbles has been part of all the 10 events in the past six years but, due to health reasons, unfortunately may not be making event number 11,” she said.

  • All donated goods could be dropped off to the Southland Express office at 5 The Crescent, Invercargill, up until noon on Friday, February 26.
