THE Village Markets, held next to The Pantry in South Invercargill, will return on Saturday with monthly markets planned throughout the summer.
Hosted by The Pantry, 133 Grace St, up to 30 stallholders set up monthly last summer in the community space alongside the shop.
The Pantry chairwoman Janette Malcolm said the markets had been a thriving community space for people to get-together and catch up with family and friends.
Continuing the community theme, the fees from the stalls would be donated to The Pantry’s Pay-It-Forward food box programme, Ms Malcolm said.
“We saw a need for the food box programme during last year’s Covid lockdown. Families in the 9812 post code were usually nominated by the local schools to receive a box and, during the recent Alert Level 3 and subsequently, we saw a great increase in the need for the programme.”
Each market runs from 9.30am to 12.30pm, with the first to be held this Saturday, with another on November 6, then December 11. The markets would resume on January 29, with others on March 5 and the final one for the season on April 2.
Depending on alert levels, tables would be spaced and masks would be required. There would also be three controlled entry points and a QR code, sign-in register and sanitiser.
Ms Malcolm said having the markets set up beside The Pantry was a bonus.
“It’s nice having The Pantry there. It gives people the chance to visit, have a coffee, a scone or a cheese roll and socialise after visiting the market.”
