WORK began this week to install traffic lights at the intersection of Deveron and Gala Sts in Invercargill.
Fulton Hogan is contracted to complete the work on behalf of the Invercargill City Council (ICC).
The work is not expected to be completed until late February.
ICC project manager Hayden Dennis said there would be temporary road closures, turning restrictions, 30kmh speed limits, some parking removed, footpaths closed and lots of road cones placed intermittently throughout the work period.
The ICC had been monitoring the intersection and had assessed risks associated with it, he said.
“During peak hours there are long wait times for traffic turning right on to Gala St or travelling straight for Queens Park Crescent or Deveron St.”
The risk to safety at the intersection was increased by poor visibility for turning traffic, often because of parked cars on Gala St, he said.
“The new lights will drastically improve pedestrian safety and will enable road users to manoeuvre through the intersection more easily with a lot less risk.”
