Working together

The merger of the Van Asch Deaf Education and the Kelston Deaf Education centres into a collaborated Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education New Zealand, was marked at the Invercargill offices last week.

Deaf pupils (from left) Holly Driver (14), Grace Matthews (10), and Tiana Petre (14), joined pupils, staff, parents and members of the deaf community to mark the occasion.

All deaf and hard of hearing children in Southland attend mainstream schools.

Southland team leader Jill Meikle said staff at Ko Taku Reo provided one-on-one support to pupils, teachers, teacher aides and families to ensure all children aged from pre-school to 18 received an equitable education.

There were about 30 students from Heriot to Stewart Island who received help from the organisation, she said. Photo: Karen PascoRunning sportsEntrainement Nike
