Fighting fit

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) principal rural fire officer for Southland Timo Bierline, of Invercargill, (left) times firefighters Roger Sutton, Ken Keenan, Brodie Butcher, all of Hedgehope, FENZ deputy principal rural fire officer for Southland David Covey, of Invercargill, and Alan Jones, of Hedgehope, at the Surrey Park running track in Invercargill for a Candidate Physical Ability Test (PAT) last Thursday.

Mr Bierline said the test was a recognised international standard to measure a person’s ability to handle the physical demands of being a firefighter and to be eligible for overseas deployment.

Thursday’s trial involved wearing an 18kg vest, walking at a fast pace over 4km within 45 minutes.

All those taking part had previously been deployed overseas to help fight fires, some to Australia, others to North America, and some to both. All five completed the test successfully.
