A record $81,000 was raised for the society with a sell-out crowd of 350 guests. Event organiser Dee Heenan said the purpose of the ball was two-fold.

‘‘Firstly it is to raise awareness of the incredible work that the Cancer Society do in our
community working with clients in the community living with cancer and also to help support the Cancer Society with funding for their programmes.’’

Cancer Society — Otago Southland division chief executive Rachael Hart said they were thankful for the Southland community’s generosity.

‘‘We are committed to ensuring that nobody faces cancer alone, and offer one-on-one support, groups and programs, and prosthetics services to people from Te Anau, Bluff, Lumsden, Gore and Invercargill — and everywhere in between.

Mr Owens made a surprise announcement of an additional $10,000 on the
night.
