IT was a fabulous afternoon out for friends Ann McKenzie, of Invercargill (left), and Denise Randall, of Wallacetown, when they attended the Melbourne Cup festivities with the owners of competing Southland-bred horse The Chosen One on Tuesday.
Mrs Randall’s late husband was a friend of one of the horse’s co-owners, Neil van Schaik.
“We thought it would be quite nice to come,” she said.
The pair were part of a crowd of about 200 people who gathered to watch the race at Ascot Park Hotel.
As the racing supporters peered at the two large screens during the race, a loud gasp rang out when transmission glitched.
However, it was soon followed by great excitement from the crowd as the owners and their friends and family watched The Chosen One slowly make its way up the field taking third place, only to be pipped in the last few metres to finish fourth.
