People connect to celebrate Buddha

A DEDICATED event celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha began last Wednesday night in Invercargill.

Guests at the Sri Lankan cultural event were drenched in the light of the large and colourful pandol.

Harshani Fernando worked with the organising team and said the pandol, or thorana, was an important aspect of the event and was very popular in Sri Lanka.

“We devote light in the name of lord Buddha. It symbolises how Buddha enlightened the world with his knowledge and wisdom.”

She said guests travelled to Invercargill from other parts of New Zealand and members of the community were welcome to join them for the experience.

“At the end of the day I think it is about bringing people together.”

There was an offering of free food to guests, dansal.

The event was held at the Gala St reserve until last Saturday.
