THE chimney at Tiwai Point aluminium smelter was lit up last week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the smelter.
New Zealand’s Aluminium Smelter general manager Stew Hamilton said the first aluminium was poured in the site in April 1971, with the official opening of the plant held in November that year.
“This is the first time we have ever lit up the stack and it is nice to be able to share this anniversary milestone with our people and Bluff residents. Celebrating 50 years as part of the Southland community is very special.”
The light was turned on at 7pm last Thursday and coincided with the 50th anniversary of the first shipment of alumina which arrived to the site on the vessel Shinyo Maru on April 22, 1971.
