THE first snail race was held as part of Barnardos Invercargill Early Learning Centre’s Summer Fun Day last Saturday.

About 50 people attended the event, including residents from the Peacehaven Village retirement home and Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt. The centre also received an Invercargill City Council (ICC) Friendly brand award certificate in recognition of its commitment to Southland families.

ICC community development officer Gemma Crawford said the centre’s point of difference was that its staff had worked in with residents at Peacehaven Village.

“They do activities about once a week with the elderly. I thought that was really neat. It provides that contact which some children might not have, and the other way around as well.”

Invercargill city councillor Darren Ludlow said the centre helped children realise they had a voice and were able to interact and contribute.
