The Orphans Aid International Upcycle Awards were held at the Southern Institute of Technology Hansen Hall on Saturday.

Upcycled garments were paraded in the following categories, denim, costume, vintage/retro and open, with five awards presented to:

Denim Award: Vanessa Atkinson for her collection of bomber jackets which were constructed from denim and bedspreads;

Costume Award: Frazer Murdoch, aka Supreme Commander Battlelord, for his apocalyptic steampunk warlord outfit complemented with futuristic battle-gear;

Open Award: Jude Morrison for her embellished upcycled jophurs, vintage wool jacket and dashing hat;

Vintage/retro Award: Elizabeth Andrews for a mixed tartan crop jacket, lined with a vintage man’s dressing gown.

A special Young/budding Designer Award was also presented to Elizabeth Dyson (11), of Motu Valley, Tuatapere.

The three judges, Margot Sutherland, Rachael Goldsmith and Margaret Lusty, judged the garments on overall theme, work and construction, with the Overall Award to Jude Morrison.

The evening raised about $1800 for Orphans Aid International.
