Construction of Chinese Garden in Queens Park is now under way.
The plans for the 1508sqm friendship garden, near the aviary and winter gardens, was first proposed in February last year to recognise Invercargill’s sister city relationship with Suqian, China.
ICC parks manager Robin Pagan said work started several months ago with excavations for a pond having already been carried out by an independent contractor. The pond’s lining was expected to be installed soon but construction work would not begin until conditions were drier, he said.
Queens Park staff would be used for much of the landscaping work.
Mr Pagan said the project was on schedule but he did not expect the garden to be finished before the end of this year.
The project had a $600,000 budget.
