ILT Stadium Southland event and ticketing manager Lilly Griffin hopes the Southland community embraces the Schick 3x3 National Basketball competition.

INVERCARGILL residents will soon get a taste of the latest Olympic sport, described as “fast, furious and physical”.

ILT Stadium Southland is set to host the Basketball New Zealand’s 3×3 National Basketball competition from November 12-14, involving 10 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams ing a local team made up of Southland Sharks players.

The basketball revised model would feature at next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

Each match would last a maximum of 10 minutes, with a 12-second shot clock.

It was played on half a court, with one hoop, and there was no half-time, no quarters and no time-outs.

Stadium event and ticketing manager Lilly Griffin said it was a great opportunity to see some of the best basketball players in New Zealand in action.

“It is the first event of its kind. We are thrilled to be hosting the first national competition.

“We really hope the whole Southland community come and support only the Sharks, but basketball.”

The competition was initially scheduled to be played in May, then in September, but it had to be rescheduled due to Covid-19.

She said the three-day event would comprise 20 teams, 70 games, during five sessions.

“It is way more fast-paced than basketball. We have all the teams here at once. So it is a great event for everyone.”

ILT Stadium Southland general manager Nigel Skelt said the event would be a great opportunity to promote and develop the 3×3 competition throughout Southland.

“In my opinion, it’s a game of the future and a game everyone can play.

“Our (Stadium) team simply can’t wait for the razzle-dazzle the competition will bring.”

The SIT Zero Fees Southland Sharks had named a powerful four-man squad for the competition Hyrum Harris, Alonzo Burton Dom Kelman-Poto and 2019 captain Alex Pledger.

Sharks general manager Jill Bolger said she was delighted with the line-up.

“We are so excited to have the Sharks’ singlet back in action this year and it’s even better that it will be in front of our brilliant Shark Tank fans.

“We know 2020 hasn’t been a lot of fun for anyone so to be able to put on a show at home is the best way to put a lid on this year and whet the appetite for next year’s NBL season.”
