Appleby takes the lead in Southland cricket contest

APPLEBY has taken the competition lead in Southland’s 50-over premier cricket league on Saturday after beating Marist by six wickets on the main oval at Queens Park.

Marist batted first and was bowled out for 79 in their 21st over.

Captain Ben McKercher top scored with 35 from 43 balls.

Hayden Hart was Appleby’s best bowler taking five wickets for 25 from his eight overs.

Appleby then lost just four wickets while batting their way to victory in the 20th over. Jacob Downing top scored with a patient 24 runs, while Kieran Lloyd (20) and Clint Goad (15) scored their runs at a fast rate.

Metropolitan beat Old Boys on the second field at Queens Park.

Metro batted first and was bowled out in the 31st over for 107.

Old Boys could then only manage 101 runs before being bowled out in the 24th over.

Southland Boys’ High School (SBHS) and Waikoikoi had scheduled this round 12 game to be played back in October, and the match was subsequently abandoned.

Twelve rounds have now been played and three more rounds are scheduled before the finals.

This Saturday, Waikoikoi will be favourites on their home ground Marist.

Old Boys takes on SBHS on the Queens Park main oval, while Metro and Appleby will be on ground two.

Marist is in fifth position and could still possibly sneak into the top four but SBHS is already out of contention.
