Bowls champion in her element in south

Waverley Bowling Club member Wendy Miller makes a roll under the watchful eye of New Zealand bowls champion Jo Edwards at the Waihopai Bowling Club in Invercargill last Friday.

NEW Zealand bowls champion Jo Edwards loves supporting good causes in Southland.

So much so, she returned to Invercargill to play in the Bowls Southland Charity Pairs Tournament last week – the 10th time she has competed in the event.

While here, she and husband Dave, a former New Zealand team coach, also took the time on a sunny Friday afternoon to coach junior bowlers – those who have only played for one to five years.

The couple said they really enjoyed the southern hospitality.

“We love coming down here but one of the big reasons is seeing our sport used as a vehicle to raise funds,” Mr Edwards said.

“Having a charity event like this is super special.”

For Mrs Edwards, the rekindling of friendships was also a great excuse to visit.

“We always stay with Liz and Trevor Tomlins,” she said.

“It’s one of the best tournaments I’m involved with.

Waverley Bowling Club member Wendy Miller was one of those to pick up some tips and tricks from Mrs Edwards.

“Actually to watch where you’re bowling not to drop your head, that’s the biggest thing for me,” she said.
