CHESS players of all ages are invited to take part in the Invercargill Spring Rapid Chess Tournament to be held at ILT Stadium Southland on Saturday, September 23.

Invercargill Chess Club co-founders and tournament organisers Edward Lee and Gary McLean said the Otago University Chess Club had already confirmed its attendance at the tournament.

“We played against them in Dunedin last month and now they are coming to play at our tournament in Invercargill,” Mr Lee said.

“The tournament is open for everyone. There will be a junior section for those under 18 and an open section for all ages.”

Mr McLean said Invercargill Chess Club members were getting better and better.

“While playing chess you’ve got to manage lots of different skills. Time management, recording the game and making decisions is really important. Our club members learn how to accept losses, recognise good moves and how to play their own game,” he said.

Any one can enter the tournament. Email entries to before 9am on September 23. There is no entry fee.

For more information phone Mr McLean on 0224 793 059.
