Clean sweep for team

IT was a clean sweep for James Hargest College at the South Island Secondary School Squash Championships in Nelson this month, with both the girls’ and boys’ teams winning gold.
The boys’ team, seeded number one heading into the competition, beat Waimea College, Richmond, in the finals 3-0 while breaking Christchurch Boys’ High School’s 15-year hold on the title.
The girls’ team exceeded expectations, beating first-seeded Marlborough Girls’ College (MGC) A in the final 2-1.
JHC squash team manager Waine Harding said the school’s top-ranked player, Hayden O’Connor, was stronger than the rest of the competition and, despite the team not having an easy time of it, all members played well.
Anna O’Connor, the school’s top-ranked girl, faced tough competition, playing the hardest, closefought games, but her team backed her up, helping to secure the win, he said.
