THERE was to have been to premier grade rugby league games at Invercargill last Saturday, but Winton/City defaulted to He Tauaa.
The other game went ahead between Cowboys and Cooks. The Southland clubs are now in to their last few games ahead of the semi-finals and the final.
The game was played in very wet and cold conditions at Elles Rd.
Five minutes into the game and Cooks gained their first points on the board with a penalty goal. Neither Cooks nor Cowboys put any more points on the board for the duration of the first half.
Cooks displayed good defence throughout the first half despite some efforts by Cowboys to break through to score.
In the second half Cowboys changed tactics and they ran in six tries, converting three of them. Cooks gave it their all in the second half, but despite their efforts they did not gain any more points. The final whistle saw Cowboys take the win 30-2.
The players made a hasty retreat to the clubrooms for hot showers after a game played in bitter conditions.
Winton/City will play Cowboys tomorrow night at the Collegiate grounds and on Saturday He Tauaa will play Cooks at Elles Rd at 2.30pm. The venue may change to Sandy Point if Elles Rd is not suitable.
