Family-friendly BikeFest providing community integration

MEMBERS of the Colombian community in Invercargill, including former professional cyclist Moises Vargas Triana (centre), took part in a BikeFest event last weekend. Held at Graeme Cockroft Park on Sunday, about 40 Colombians attended the family-friendly event, which had been organised by Sport Southland’s Healthy Families Invercargill team, the Red Cross, Welcoming Communities, Cycling Southland and the Invercargill City Council. Healthy Families Invercargill play systems innovator Cathy Jordan said the organisations involved were keen to learn more about the needs of the former refugees, with cycling seen as an important way of providing independence and a means of integrating into the wider community. “The purpose of the day was to have fun, develop relationships and get a good understanding of the barriers as we start to build a cycling network,” she said.
