THE fire service team has confirmed it’s one of the fastest emergency service in Invercargill, with victory over the police at the annual corporate cycling race held at the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome on Sunday.

Wensley’s Fire 1 were also last year’s champions.

They won the 1000 metres Italian pursuit final in a time of 1 min 14.048 sec. The police clocked 1.15.017.

The Southern District Health Board’s Southern Scrubs team moved up the table to claim third place over Fonterra Milking It.

Wensley’s Fire 1 had earlier clocked the fastest time of the day – 1.13.286.

Nineteen teams took part in the 12th annual corporate pursuit race, which pits local businesses against each other throughout the day.

Cycling Southland general manager Mark Hotton said a new category – the all-comers division – was introduced this year, allowing smaller businesses to take part.

Many of the riders in the all-comers division had not ridden on the velodrome before entering, he said.
