THE Fight for Kidz 12-bout charity boxing tournament at ILT Stadium Southland last Saturday night was a great night out, one of the best to date, co-organiser Dave Bartley said.

The fights were well matched and the crowd was well-behaved, he said.

The final fight between Marist Rugby Club’s Tangaora Walker and Star Rugby Club ‘s Tama Toomata was a standout, with Toomata winning the bout.

It was “absolutely brutal”, Bartley said.

“They went five rounds and they gave it their all.”

The blue team was the overall winner on the night, winning seven fights to the red team’s five.

Kendall McMinn, who won her fight against Megan Anderson, was named best boxer of the night.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to Koha Kai, a non-profit organisation which teaches people with disabilities hospitality and horticultural skills, while preparing healthy lunches for children in some of Invercargill’s low decile schools.

Bartley said it would take a couple of weeks before the amount raised for Koha Kai was known.
