THE New Zealand Red Cross is hosting a fun Champions Football Tournament in Invercargill on Sunday and needs more entries for what promises to be a great day out.

Red Cross Southland Humanitarian Services co-ordinator Peter Saba said the tournament was a great way for the Southland community to come together to raise funds and support the work of Red Cross in the region.

“Now is the time to get your workmates on board, convince your friends and family to have a go or form a team with your local community group. No previous playing experience is needed,” he said.

“This tournament is for everyone and is a fun way to help people in need.”

Entries would remain open until Saturday, he said.

Mr Saba said local donations were crucial to community and humanitarian work done in Southland.

In Southland, New Zealand Red Cross runs Community Transport, which helps people get to and from health appointments; Young Humanitarians, a programme to develop young leaders in the community; a Curtain Bank and bedding packs for families in need; and refugee resettlement programmes, which help people settle and build a life in Southland.

The tournament was an important fundraiser and an opportunity to highlight the organisation’s increased presence in Southland, Mr Saba said.

There will be food available and other activities on site during the day.

Registration for each player is $10 and each team will need 10 players, which includes three subs. Teams will compete in a group stage before the knockout rounds.
