Harness racing in full swing during summer

HARNESS Racing is in full swing for summer with many events scheduled for December and January.

Under the new Covid-19 traffic light system, the public are welcome on course but vaccine passports are required for admission to all events.

The big pre-Christmas meeting is the Wairio Trotting Club Cup Day at Central Southland Raceway in Winton on Saturday, December 18. Tent sites are available for the day while there will be $2 mini jeep rides for the children, a visit from Santa Claus and a lolly scramble.

The premier race will be the Otautau Four Square Supermarket Wairio Cup over 2400m for a stake of $20,000.

Before the Wairio meet, both the Winton and Wyndham Harness Racing Clubs have meetings at Winton on December 9 and at Young Quinn Raceway in Wyndham on December 15, both perfect opportunities for groups to have Christmas get-togethers.

Christmas Eve will see a new event on the calendar, once again at Central Southland Raceway in Winton, a great opportunity for tradies to finish up early and have a barbecue trackside with plenty of racing for ready-made entertainment.

Between Christmas and New Year, the Gore Harness Racing Club meets on December 27 and will be a great post-Christmas event.

The Central Otago circuit takes place early in the New Year with the Central Otago Trotting Club racing at Omakau on January 2, Roxburgh Trotting Club at the Roxburgh Racecourse on January 4 and the Wyndham Harness Racing Club at Cromwell on January 6.

Each of these meetings will have plenty of entertainment and activities, and are ideal for the whole family.

The Northern Southland Trotting Club race at Ascot Park Raceway in Invercargill on January 12, will feature some premier races on the programme, including the Northern Southland Cup.

There will be twilight racing at Winton on January 19 – an ideal time to enjoy midweek racing – while the month ends with the Invercargill Harness Racing Club Cup Day on January 29 with free children’s entertainment, prizes and giveaways.

Tent sites are available at this meeting.
