The first Invercargill Chess Rapid Tournament was held at ILT Stadium Southland last week.

Tournament organiser Edward Lee said about 40 players from Otago University, Wanaka, Te Anau, Lumsden and Invercargill took part in open and junior sections.

The ages of the participants ranged from 7 to 81, he said.

Lee, a member of the Invercargill Chess Club, was the overall winner of the tournament and his son Dylan, of Southland Boys’ High School, was the top junior in the open section.

The winner of the under-18 junior section was Northern Southland College pupil Theo McMullien.

(1) OPEN SECTION: Overall Final Standings

Winner: Edward Lee Invercargill Chess Club with 6 out of 6

2nd: Lewis Kim (OUSA Club)-with 5 out of 6

3rd: Sean Ward  (OUSA Club)-with 4.5 out of 6

4th: Paddy Cheah  (OUSA Club)-with 4.5 out of 6

Top Junior Finishers in the OPEN SECTION were:

Winner: Dylan Lee – Southland Boys’ High School with 3.5 out of 6

Second: Fred Mun -James Hargest College with 3 out of 6

Third: Liam Barnes- James Hargest College with 3 out of 6

(2) JUNIOR SECTION: Overall Final Standings-Under 18 Section:

Winner: Theo McMullien (Northern Southland College) 6 out of 6

Second: Jacob Mortimer (Otatara School) 5 out of 6

Third: Ethan Holden (Northern Southland College) 4 out of 6

Under 12-16 Winner: Jacob Mortimer (Otatara School)

Under-10 Winner: Timothy Mcilhone (Waverley Primary)

  • Invercargill Chess Club, located at 9 Tay St (Cornerstone Care Centre), was inviting new members interested in playing chess on Fridays, 7pm-9pm.
