The first Invercargill Chess Rapid Tournament was held at ILT Stadium Southland last week.
Tournament organiser Edward Lee said about 40 players from Otago University, Wanaka, Te Anau, Lumsden and Invercargill took part in open and junior sections.
The ages of the participants ranged from 7 to 81, he said.
Lee, a member of the Invercargill Chess Club, was the overall winner of the tournament and his son Dylan, of Southland Boys’ High School, was the top junior in the open section.
The winner of the under-18 junior section was Northern Southland College pupil Theo McMullien.

Under-10 Winner: Timothy Mcilhone (Waverley Primary)
- Invercargill Chess Club, located at 9 Tay St (Cornerstone Care Centre), was inviting new members interested in playing chess on Fridays, 7pm-9pm.
