WITH four more rounds of Southland club cricket, all six clubs are still in contention for the finals of the 50-over Premier League. Qualifying will be the most difficult for the defending champion, Marist.
This Saturday, Marist will play at Appleby, Waikoikoi will host Southland Boys’ High School (SBHS) while Old Boys takes on Metropolitan at Queens Park.
Invercargill Old Boys thrashed Marist last weekend. Old Boys bowler Blake Tempero ripped through the Marist top order; included in Tempero’s five-wicket haul was the danger man Shaun itzgibbon. Marist was dismissed for just 103 with Jeremy Boyle the main provider with 36 runs. Tempero finished his 10 overs with figures of five wickets for 34 runs.
Old Boys took just 13 overs to reach the total with eight wickets to spare. Opener Satwinder Singh made an unbeaten 63 from 36 balls.
Waikoikoi beat Appleby by 114 runs in Invercargill. The visitors batted first and made 264-7 from its 50 overs. The top six batsmen all made solid contributions; the highest scorers being Kurt Thompson (40), Liam McFaul (39) and Jared McKenzie (36) before the number eight batsman Nic Reed finished the innings off with an unbeaten 42 from 24 balls. Waikoikoi’s left arm spinner Hamish Cooke then took five wickets for 15 runs as Appleby was bundled out for 150. Calum Johnstone top scored for Appleby with 33.
The Metropolitan and SBHS game was postponed until later this month.
Central Western had another big win in division one in Te Anau. Central made 253 from 40 overs thanks to an unbeaten century by Thomas Beggs. Beggs’ score of 132 from 93 balls included sixteen boundaries. James Wadsworth (59) chipped away at the other end. Te Anau’s chase got off to a good start due to Alex Webster (51), but the locals then capitulated for a total of 115. Ashleigh Harrison took five wickets for just 14 runs.
